George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732. He was a tall and strong man, and he loved to ride horses. When he was 16 years old, he went to fight in the French and Indian War. He was a brave soldier, and he quickly rose through the ranks.After the war, Washington returned to Virginia and became a farmer. He also served in the Virginia legislature. In 1775, the colonies decided to fight for their independence from Great Britain. Washington was chosen to be the commander of the Continental Army.Washington led the American army to victory in the Revolutionary War. In 1783, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The United States was now a free country. Washington was elected the first President of the United States in 1789.He served two terms as President, and he helped to establish the new government. Washington was a wise and fair leader, and he is considered to be one of the greatest presidents in American history. He is remembered as a great patriot and a true American hero. Washington DC was established as the capital of the United States.
